Lunchtime Discussions on Living the Christian Faith

  • Designed for Busy Professionals - All Welcome
  • Meeting in the City of London
  • Lunch provided by our hosts
  • Talk by a Dominican friar + round-table discussion
This forum is an opportunity for busy professionals to deepen their understanding of how to live out the Christian faith in their day-to-day lives, considering the challenges they encounter in work, in home life, and in a society that often holds to different values.

Programme for Season Three - Autumn 2017

1. The Diversity Agenda - How far can Christians go?

Thursday 26 October, led by Fr Simon Gaine OP  (Regent, Blackfriars Oxford)

In this session we will look at a thorny issue for Christians in the corporate world:

  • How to balance the respect we owe colleagues against our integrity in sexual and other moral matters?
  • To what extent is the Catholic faith compatible with the complex regulations and culture associated with the evolving diversity agenda?

2. Money - 'Root of all Evil' or a Means to the Good?

Wednesday 8 November, led by Fr Richard Ounsworth OP  (scripture scholar and Provincial Bursar).

In today's world of electronic banking, Bitcoins and 'Quantitative Easing', money is a seemingly abstract phenomenon, although still very tangible in terms of our daily need for it.

So what is money? What did Jesus think about it? And what moral value can we assign to it - is it “the Devil’s dung”, or a good thing, or morally neutral?

Join us for a discussion of moral questions associated with our financial systems.

3. What does it take to be Brave?

Wednesday 13 December, led by Fr Richard Ounsworth OP (change to advertised speaker).

Christians in Britain today may not be literally thrown to the lions, but it can sometimes take real inner strength to hold to our faith in a hostile work environment.

So what is courage? How do we practise this virtue in our workplace? – and do the right thing even if it will make us unpopular!

About the Dominican Friars

* The Dominican Friars are a religious order in the Catholic church. They specialise in the intellectual apostolate, and their high level of training allows them to engage and debate with a wide range of viewpoints and at many levels. As the 'Order of Preachers' they have a strong tradition of engaging preaching and are much sought-after as speakers. Also known as the 'Blackfriars', the area of the same name in London is called after the great Dominican priory which once stood there.
