Season Eight - 2020

Online Session 3: 'Courage' - with Fr Toby Lees OP

'Neither Nick Leeson nor FTSE Tracker'

Tuesday, 30 June, 12.30pm (UK time)

An introduction to the virtue of courage, one of the four cardinal virtues, and one which finds its ultimate expression in the act of martyrdom. While not everyone is called to lose their life for their faith, nonetheless we are called to bear witness.

In this talk, Fr Toby Lees OP, will be looking at some of the ways that we are called to be courageous in contemporary society, at work and in the public sphere. We will look at how courage lies somewhere between recklessness and timidity and how we might cultivate this virtue.

2. 'The best of times, the worst of times' - What lessons can we learn from the lockdown?

Tuesday, 26 May   RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE

For some, the lockdown has been a time of calm, stillness and renewal. For others, it has been filled with stress and anxiety, frustration and uncertainty. Many of us will have experienced both sides. So, as we emerge from quarantine, how can we hold on to the positives and find strength to face the continued uncertainties?

Our speaker, Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP, is a popular speaker and spiritual writer, and former Master of the Order of Preachers. He will start us off with a talk and lead the discussion.

This session is part of The Dominican Forum series, which is lunchtime discussions on the Christian faith for busy professionals.

Our Usual Format (outside of lockdown)

  • Designed for Busy Professionals - All Welcome (no charge)
  • Meeting in the City of London
  • Free Lunch provided by our hosts
  • Talk by a Dominican friar + round-table discussion
  • Opportunities to meet with other like-minded people

This forum is an opportunity for busy professionals to deepen their understanding of how to live out the Christian faith in their day-to-day lives, considering the challenges they encounter in work, in home life, and in a society that often holds to different values.

About the Dominican Friars

* The Dominican Friars are a religious order in the Catholic church. They specialise in the intellectual apostolate, and their high level of training allows them to engage and debate with a wide range of viewpoints and at many levels. As the 'Order of Preachers' they have a strong tradition of engaging preaching and are much sought-after as speakers. Also known as the 'Blackfriars', the area of the same name in London is called after the great Dominican priory which once stood there.
