Programme for Season Seven - Autumn 2019

1. What should a Christian family be like?

Tuesday, 22 October

We are all members of families, and as Christians we may wonder if we are ‘doing it right’.

How can we be good Christian parents? Good husbands or wives? Or indeed, good (adult) children of our own parents?

How should we approach a wayward relative? Or keep on good terms with family members who don't share our faith?

Fr Oliver Keenan OP will outline some key principles and lead our discussion.

2. Living with Others

Tuesday, 26 November

Today’s world is pluralistic and so are our workplaces. We encounter people with a diverse variety of backgrounds and points of view; and while some people around us may share our perspectives, be they religious, political or moral, others may be strongly opposed to them.

So how do we build community and seek the common good? How do we build friendships and working relationships in such situations? And on a larger scale, how do we renew our social and political culture to overcome polarisation and division?

Fr Nicholas Crowe OP will draw on the Christian tradition to offer ways forward, including the wisdom that can be found in religious life and monastic rules.

3. What is Faith?

Friday, 13 December

Faith is a curious word. We can 'have faith' in all sorts of institutions and everyday things, but when it comes to religion, for many people the word just represents a certain vague, irrational way of thinking. But is it?

Many people today look upon faith as something that others have, but they don't ("I'm not religious"). So if people don't have faith, how do they get it? Do they simply suspend their critical faculties? Take a leap in the dark?

Fr Richard Ounsworth OP will consider what Christians understand by this important word, and lead our discussion.

About the Dominican Friars

* The Dominican Friars are a religious order in the Catholic church. They specialise in the intellectual apostolate, and their high level of training allows them to engage and debate with a wide range of viewpoints and at many levels. As the 'Order of Preachers' they have a strong tradition of engaging preaching and are much sought-after as speakers. Also known as the 'Blackfriars', the area of the same name in London is called after the great Dominican priory which once stood there.
