Free Will-writing Service

Writing or updating your Will may be something that you have kept putting off.

However, dying without a current Will could cause problems for your dependants, or mean that your wealth is taken by the state. So, it is recommended to make a Will and keep it up to date.

Special Offer

To help our supporters put their affairs in order, we are pleased to offer you access to a free Will-writing service.

Many charity supporters have already taken advantage of this to write their Will with the help of professional lawyers within the National Free Wills Network.

How it works

In 2023, we joined an organisation called ‘Your Catholic Legacy’ (YCL), which promotes the making of gifts in people’s Wills to support Catholic charities.

As a member of YCL, we can offer you free access to a free Will-writing service.
This is how it works:

  1. Contact us using the secure form below.
  2. We will forward your details to the National Free Wills Network.
  3. You will be sent an information pack and a list of participating law firms in your area.
  4. Choose one of these law firms and book a free appointment.
  5. Once you have completed the writing of your Will, we will cover the small fee payable.
  6. Our charity is willing to take on the cost of these fees because it encourages more people to leave a gift in their Will, a significant source of income to the friars.

Who can use this free service?

Any of our UK-based supporters can request to use the service.

In some rarer cases, if your Will needs to be more complex, such as if you have overseas assets or other complexities, then you may need to pay a top-up charge on top of the standard fee that is covered by us. This is not usually the case, however.

Should I include a gift in my Will for the Dominican friars?

There is no obligation to include a gift to the Dominican Friars in your Will, however this would of course be appreciated!

  • Gifts made to the friars in this way have included amounts from £1,000 up to multi-million-pound properties.
  • The most commonly given amount is £5,000.

If you choose to do so, then news of this future gift is shared with us, and so helps us to understand what support we may expect to get in the future from gifts made in Wills.

Whether or not you choose to use the Free Will-Writing Service, making a gift to our charity through your Will is a way of creating a lasting benefit for the friars and for the many people who are served by us.

Essential information about including a gift to the friars in your Will can be found here: Making a Gift in your Will

Your personal data are stored securely by us and used for communications and fundraising in support of our mission. We comply with current UK regulations on personal data, communications, and privacy. We only share personal data outside our organisation for specific and limited purposes, subject to strict safeguards (e.g. with printers, email service providers, statutory bodies). We use some secure third-party data processors whose servers store data outside the UK but fully comply with UK regulations.

HOW LONG WE KEEP DATA

We consider our relationship with friends, donors and supporters to be life-long and we will retain much of your data indefinitely unless you request otherwise.

YOUR RIGHTS

You can ask to view, correct or erase your data at any time, and are free to withdraw any consents you give. You can complain to the UK Fundraising Regulator if we fail to respect your rights. Please note that in some cases we may be unable to erase your data if retention is required to meet our legal obligations.

COMMUNICATIONS

News. If you want to receive news mailings from us, you must opt in to one of our mailing lists. You can do this via our website.

Appeals. We may wish to send you occasional fundraising communications by post. You are free to get these by email instead, or to opt out altogether by selecting one of the options below.

RESEARCH WE UNDERTAKE

We research our contacts to discover those who may have the ability to offer larger gifts, using public-domain sources (e.g. internet searches). Sometimes we may use a secure third-party research service to develop our understanding of those we suspect of falling into this group: their interests, financial capacity, social networks, philanthropy. This information makes it more likely that our fundraising approaches will be welcomed and appropriate.
